Deves Oil Ring Installation

For long time users, installing a Deves oil ring takes a few quick turns. First timers may need some guidance. While the illustration below is included with all ring sets, here's little more detail.

View 1 illustrates the placement of the expander ("A" on the oil ring envelope) in the oil ring groove. It is very important that the gap on the expander be aligned with the wrist pin. This is the reference point for the three other pieces used to complete the installation.

View 2 shows the piston turned 90 degrees (a quarter turn) to illustrate where the gap on the rail ("B" on the oil ring envelope) is aligned with the side of the piston. The rail must be put on the piston with a spiral motion, the same as you would with a conventional three-piece oil ring. If the rails are pulled apart to be snapped onto the piston, they could easily be bent out of round, making the oil control ring totally ineffective.

View 3 shows the spacer, which is the next piece to be installed ("C" on the oil ring envelope) Turn the piston another 90 degrees (another quarter turn) so that the gap in the spacer is lined up with the wrist pin, but on the other side of the piston from the gap in the expander ("A"). Again, a spiral motion is necessary to avoid ruining the spacer during installation.

View 4 presents the last piece, the top rail ("D" on the oil ring envelope). Turn the piston another 90 degrees and use the same spiral motion to align the gap of this rail with the side of the piston opposite the bottom rail ("B"). The gap on this top rail is 90 degrees from the spacer gap and is 180 degrees from the gap on the bottom rail.

View 5 shows a cutaway view of the total assembly. At this point, all the gaps are at 90 degrees to each other.
